Sports-related eye injuries

Ocular Trauma

Key Points

  • •90% of sports-related eye injuries are preventable with appropriate protective eyewear - prevention is the most important management
  • •Projectiles smaller than the orbital aperture (<40–45 mm) bypass the orbital rim and impact the globe directly - squash balls, badminton shuttlecocks, and racquetballs are the highest-risk projectiles
  • •Retinal dialysis (inferotemporal) is the classic retinal finding in blunt sports trauma - may present with delayed retinal detachment weeks to months later
  • •Polycarbonate lenses (ASTM F803 standard) are 250x more impact-resistant than glass - the standard material for all sports protective eyewear
  • •All functionally monocular athletes must wear protective eyewear in every sport and should avoid boxing/MMA
