Blepharoplasty
Oculoplasty
Key Points
- •Always distinguish dermatochalasis (redundant skin → blepharoplasty) from ptosis (low MRD1 → levator surgery) - different diagnoses requiring different procedures
- •Visual field testing with and without tape is mandatory for documenting functional blepharoplasty - requires ≥12–15 degrees improvement in the superior field
- •Always leave a minimum of 20 mm of skin between brow and lid margin after upper lid blepharoplasty to prevent lagophthalmos
- •Retrobulbar haemorrhage is the most dangerous complication - treat with immediate lateral canthotomy and cantholysis
- •Pre-operative dry eye assessment is essential - blepharoplasty in patients with unrecognised dry eye can cause severe post-operative symptoms
