Branch retinal vein occlusion

Retina & Vitreous

Key Points

  • •BRVO is the second most common retinal vascular disorder; occurs at AV crossings due to arteriosclerotic compression; hypertension is the strongest risk factor
  • •Ischaemic BRVO (≥5 DA non-perfusion on FFA) carries ~40% NV risk - non-ischaemic BRVO has <5% NV risk and better visual prognosis
  • •Anti-VEGF is first-line for BRVO macular oedema: BRAVO (ranibizumab +18.3 letters) and VIBRANT (aflibercept +17.0 letters, superior to grid laser)
  • •BVOS established grid laser for persistent macular oedema and sectoral scatter laser (not PRP) for ischaemic BRVO with NV
